Michael Justin Petit

Mike Petit passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends, in San Luis Obispo on February 7, 2026. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. 

Mike was born on October 27, 1948 and grew up in Coronado, California. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Coronado High School in 1967. During his time in high school, he distinguished himself as an accomplished athlete. He served as the starting varsity quarterback for three seasons and was also the team’s starting pitcher in baseball. 

Following high school, Mike was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Vietnam as a dog handler in the Military Police where his dog Andre saved his life on more than one occasion. After returning home, he settled along California’s Central Coast, where he built a career as a drywall contractor. 

Mike had a deep love for the ocean and was an avid surfer and Hobie Cat sailor. He embraced life with a free spirit, never turning down a trip to Mexico in search of the best waves or the chance to share a cold beer with friends.

Above all, Mike loved his family. He is survived by his three children, Justin Petit, Shawn Petit, and Mishelle Costa; his grandchildren, Jacob Petit and Alexis Nickerson; his brother, Steve Petit; and his beloved dog, Circles. He loved his family and cherished every moment spent with them. 

Mike will be remembered for his generosity, strength, and the stories he carried from a life well lived.
